'After experiencing drastic changes in my environment, I looked for other experiences that might profoundly affect my perception of the self. So I devised another experiment where everyday I took a different
drug and drew myself under the influence. Within weeks I became lethargic and
suffered mild brain damage. I am still conducting this experiment but over
greater lapses of time. I only take drugs that are given to me.'
One small glass of 'real' absinth
1/2 gram of cocaine
3mg of Klonopin
20mg of Valium
Psilocybin Mushrooms (2caps onset)
After researching into Bryan Saunders way of working I found his self portrait project very inspiring. I appreciated the outcome of his drawings due to the range of views, colours and perspectives he created of himself whether intentional or unintentional. The useage of drugs in his project I found a little far fetched as I believe with his talents he could have produced just as good a collection of work from simply drawing how he saw himself whilst not under the influence of any illegal/legal substances. I think this takes away the personal aspect from his work as the viewer is not truly seeing him for himself and also not many people would be able to relate to his way of working. What I am going to take from Saunders work is his admiration and bravery to produce such art works but to make them more personal towards me by producing portraits from everyday life rather than an unrealistic dream-like world.
